Prestvannet Lake – Tromsø

Prestvannet is a lake in a nature reserve at the highest point of the Tromsø island, Tromsøya. The nature reserve serves as an important natural area, a stone’s throw from the urban areas of Tromsø. Over the summer, Prestvannet’s nature reserve is as a nesting place for various birds, including some rare species (such as the shy, red-throated diver (Gavia stellata)). In the winter, the lake freezes over and becomes a great spot in the City for ice skating.

After sundown, Prestvannet Lake is a top place to take in the northern lights. Being away from the lights of the city makes Prestvannet a great place to see the northern lights, just a short bus ride from the city centre. The northern lights can be seen from around 6 pm until the early hours of the morning. Being so far north, above the arctic circle, the long nights in Tromsø give you more time to catch the lights. Add to this the proximity to the magnetic north pole, increasing the intensity of the show, you will ask is there a better place to see the northern lights?

For more on nearby Tromsø, see our recent post at here. Our post on the northern lights includes more detailed information on the phenomenal light show.
