This new one is at Chelsea’s Michael Hoppen gallery and focuses on the artist’s portrait work. Meanwhile the V&A Tim Walker show continues in South Kensington. There is an altogether different free display on now at the Barbican Centre. Trevor Paglen: From ‘Apple’ to ‘Anomaly’ takes images from the 10-year old ImageNet library. It prompts questions on hidden politics, bias and stereotypes in AI. Last week we added the new Shot in Soho display at The Photographers’ Gallery. That show, which features William Klein works continues until early next year. The other William Klein show at HackelBury in South Kensington is coming to an end soon however. Also ending soon is Fall into Golden Light in New Cross as well as Nan Goldin. The Nan Goldin display is at the Tate Modern. Amongst them is a new display all about Soho, the small yet rich and diverse area of London that is home to the Photographers’ Gallery. The show features work by William Klein and Anders Petersen. Meanwhile over on The Strand there is a free exhibition of photography and sculpture from Mary Sibande. The show is part of a series of free exhibitions at Somerset House. As well as those two exhibitions, the Tim Walker continues at the V&A Museum in South Kensington. There is also more William Klein work on show just a short walk from Exhibition Road. That is as at HackelBury Art gallery. Besides those two shows, there is work from British-Liberian artist Lina Iris Viktor at Autograph in Shoreditch. First of all, we get a glimpse into the fantastical world of British fashion photographer Tim Walker. That display is on at the V&A Museum in South Kensington. Meanwhile, also in South Kensington, large scale contacts from another well-known photographer are on display. William Klein: Painted Contacts + Photographs is on at the HackelBury gallery. Over in Mayfair, but coming to an end shortly Gregory Halpern’s images from his latest photobook can be see at Huxley-Parlour. Omaha Sketchbook is the photobook aficionado’ fifth book of his own work. As well as the Gregory Halpern show, Robert Polidori, also in Mayfair, is closing soon. While those shows are closing, an new autumnal group show has just opened at the MMX Gallery in New Cross has just opened. The much anticipated Lina Iris Viktor free display has just opened at Autograph in Shoreditch. Meanwhile in Mayfair, another new show has just opened. That is at Hamiltons and features the one-time most sought after photographer in the world. Richard Avedon: Portraits includes work from two quite rare portfolios from Richard Avedon’s oeuvre. While some exhibitions are just starting, others are about to end. More specifically, this weekend is the last opportunity to catch the Cindy Sherman retrospective at the National Portrait Gallery. There are more details on that show, including exact dates further down this post. Meanwhile work by South Africans, Berni Searle work and Thabiso Sekgala can still be seen at Richard Saltoun and the Hayward Gallery. The Saltoun show also includes work from a South African fine artist. Sekgala is known, in particular, for cataloguing the lives South African ‘born-free generation’ during his own short life. Around 50 of his photographs on the themes of home and belonging as well as displacement are included in a free display at the Hayward Gallery on the South Bank. Another South African lens based artist, that is Berni Searle, features at the Richard Saltoun gallery. Meanwhile, with summer coming to an end, many London photography exhibitions are ending soon to make way for the autumn programmes. Most noteworthy in this category is the Cindy Sherman exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. This is the first major Cindy Sherman retrospective in London is years. Take for example the TPG New Talent exhibition at the Photographers’ gallery in Soho. At that one display you can see documentary and experimental as well as much in between. Meanwhile in St James’ there is conceptual work from Canadian artist Jeff Wall. That show is at the White Cube gallery. As well as those exhibitions which still have some time time run, there is a last chance to catch a few others. One such show is Neil Kenlock’s Lost Legacies, which documents the British Black Panther movement. Another display closing soon is the Civil Right photographer Ernest C. Withers work at Michael Hoppen. Also closing soon, Ghanaian-Russian artist Liz Johnson Artur’s show at the South London Gallery is coming into its last few days. First some rather stunning photography at the 2019 Earth Photo show. That is 50 shortlisted works from the competition at the Royal Geographical Society. Meanwhile at the Victoria and Albert Museum, there is an interesting display on collecting photography. This is a walk, in detail, through the history of photography from the early processes right up to digital photography. That is all with the eye of a collector. Not so far from those exhibitions, in Chelsea, Michael Hoppen presents some important photography cataloguing the Civil Rights movement. At the same time, the Neil Kenlock display over two galleries continues in Brixton. His work shines a spotlight on the Black British Panthers. Also south of the Thames, the Liz Johnson Artur show continues at the South London Gallery. In Mayfair, Huxley-Parlour present a collection of colour Vivian Maier work. Pop by 'n say hi!Photography Exhibitions London August 2019 London photography exhibitions this August include some important work from a prolific cataloguer of the Black British struggles and victories. More specifically, Neil Kenlock revels lost legacies of the Black British Panthers. The show is across two south London galleries (both Photofusion and 198 Contemporary Arts). Meanwhile at The South London Gallery, the Ghanian-Russian photographer Liz Johnson Artur’s work is on show. As well as Liz Johnson Artur, there are a few exhibitions featuring female photographers in London this summer. Firstly, there is the major Cindy Sherman retrospective at the National Portrait Gallery. Then at Huxley-Parlour, you can see some colour work from the secretive street photographer Vivian Maier. And it is not just solo shows on right now; there is also a group exhibition too. Nine female photographers showcase their work at the Flowers gallery’s Her Ground display. Unlike the previous London show by the secret street photographer and career nanny, this show features colour work. The display has just opened at Huxley-Parlour gallery in Mayfair. Meanwhile in Shoreditch the seminal series Maxine Walker: Untitled is on display at Autograph. Maxine Walker work contests the ability of photography as a medium for documentary. As well as those two exhibitions just added to the list, there is plenty more photography to see in London now. For instance, a record of the Civil Rights movement is on display in the photographs of Ernest C Withers at the Michael Hoppen Gallery. Additionally, nine female photographers display work on the theme ‘landscape’. The Photographers’ has a Manuel Álvarez Bravo exhibition in the print gallery as well as a major Latin photography show in the main gallery. While Mexican photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo’s work is on show at the Photographers’ Gallery, Michael Hoppen presents Ernest Withers work. In brief, Michael Hoppen present iconic silver gelatin Withers prints from the Civil Rights movement. Also on this summer, there landscape photography from nine female photographers at Flowers Gallery.
