Artichoke – 10 Slimming foods to eat every day

With the Christmas festivities and indulgences over, and the focus now being on “new year, new me” we thought we’d start the working year with some foods that might help dieters. This comes from a Harper’s Bazaar article. We’ve taken some pics and added a little information about each food. Yesterday we kicked off with avocado. Today it’s artichoke – the fibre-rich plant.

According to the article, artichokes are an ideal source of prebiotics – which probiotics need to feed off. Probiotics, found in fermented foods such as yoghurt, are the healthy bacteria found in the gut which may help the body digest food and regulate metabolism.

Artichoke also contains more magnesium and potassium than any other vegetable – helpful for bone building. They are rich in flavenoids and polyphenols – antioxidants which cut the risk of stroke. Studies have shown that artichoke raises the ratio of HDL to LDL, which reduces cholesterol. What’s more they are tasty and simple to prepare.
