Photo London 2018 is now but a few of weeks away. Highlights this week include two photographers whose focus has been the female form. Ellen von Unwerth celebrates her 30 year career with a new exhibition at Opera Gallery. The show features the images of supermodels, such as Claudia Schiffer, which launched her photographic career. That’s not to mention new work including images from the recent book Heimat. Meanwhile in Fitzrovia, Austrain photographer Birgit Jürgenssen is the focus. That solo exhibition concentrates on work from 1987 to 1996. Importantly Alison Jacques feature the experimental fabric series. Some exhibitions are closing soon, such as the Sony WPO Awards exhibition at Somerset House. London Photography Exhibitions April 2018 London photography exhibitions for to end April 2018 include a return of the World Photography Organisation Awards. Additionally there is something a little different over in Chelsea. The WPO show occurs yearly at Somerset House. Significantly, over 600 photographers are featured this year, including Candida Höfer. Indeed there is a room of Candida Höfer work, after her being awarded for Outstanding Contribution to Photography. There is something rather different at Michael Hoppen. Pop by 'n say hi!Fox Talbot Process Henry Fox Talbot is the father of the negative-positive photography process. Analogue or film-based photography, after falling out of favour as use of digital photography became widespread, is making a comeback. This resurgence it not too different to the re-emergence of vinyl records. Fox Talbot invented his analogue process in the 1830s. Unknown to Fox Talbot at the time, rival French inventor, Louis Daguerre was working on his own process. The Fox Talbot process had an advantage over the Daguerroypes though. Daguerre’s process created only one single print. Before the invention of the digital scanner, this meant you were stuck with single copy of the photograph. Although Fox Talbot could not produce prints directly with his camera, the ‘negatives’ he produced were much more useful. Negatives are essentially a recording of the image on film (with the modern process). If you hold a processed negative up to a light you will see the tones are reversed: the darkest parts (for example a tree trunk) would appear lightest and the lightest parts (for example white clouds in the sky) would appear darkest. London Photography Exhibitions April 2018 London photography exhibitions this April include two very different but equally interesting photographers. In contrast with the modern digital photography featured in her work, Christiane Baumgartner fuses traditional printmaking craftsmanship. On the other hand Jocelyn Lee skillfully uses colour to paint textures in her photography. Christiane Baumgartner work is on display at Alan Cristea while you can see Jocelyn Lee’s work at Huxley-Parlour. Although it feels like the Gursky exhibition has only just opened, it is coming to an end soon! Also ending soon is a free display at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Into the Woods, at the V&A, closes this weekend. Welsh photojournalist Philip Jones Griffiths’ display at TJ Boulting is another exhibition ending this weekend. These are Andreas Gursky: Rückblick and Anna Reivilä. Anna is a Finnish photographer of the Helsinki School. Her display at Purdy Hicks includes high contrast black and white landscape photographs. This work is inspired by Japanese photographer Araki. Although the White Cube Gursky exhibition is ending, the one at the Hayward gallery continues. There is a lot of high-end photography on show in London now, from the dawn of photography up to today. Victorian Giants continues at The National Portrait Gallery, representing the oldest work. Meanwhile you can see street photography from William Klein in South Kensington. There is also Robert Frank work on show at Hamiltons in Mayfair. That is William Klein and Robert Frank. The William Klein show is at Hackelbury in South Kensington. Meanwhile Robert Frank work is on show at two Mayfair galleries. At Hamiltons a new Robert Frank solo show has just opened. Not too far away at Huxley-Parlour, the The American Document continues. First, there is Victorian Giants which has just opened at the National Portrait Gallery. In brief that show features four pioneers of art photography. Meanwhile in Soho, the Deutsche Börse prize returns to the Photographers’ Gallery. Also worth a mention is the continuing exhibition at Barbican.
