First, there is Victorian Giants which has just opened at the National Portrait Gallery. In brief that show features four pioneers of art photography. Meanwhile in Soho, the Deutsche Börse prize returns to the Photographers’ Gallery. Also worth a mention is the continuing exhibition at Barbican. Another Kind of Life is set over two floors and has rooms dedicated to 20 photographers. Included are Larry Clark and Bruce Davidson as well as Alec Soth and Pieter Hugo. First of all, there is the first ever major solo Gursky exhibition. Gursky is the photographic genius behind the most expensive photograph ever sold at auction. Equally important, Elliot Erwitt has an exhibition at Huxley-Parlour (formerly Beetles+Huxley). Erwitt is known for his humour and ability to catch the ‘decisive moment’. While those exhibitions run in central London it is worth the trip east to see Valda Bailey’s exhibition. Bailey is particularly well know for use of intentional camera movement. She uses that technique to emphasise feelings invoked by landscapes and to great effect. Some London photography exhibitions will end soon. Notably, Elliot Erwitt and David Hirt. Charles March (of Glorious Goodward fame) has a new Seascape exhibition, shot mostly in the Bahamas. The use of intentional camera movement creates an impression or feeling of the seascape, leaving some room for the viewer’s imagination to fill in the detail. It is worth going to see that London photography exhibition soon as it has quite a short run. Even shorter is the one day London Photography Fair – a must for anyone looking to snap up up vintage photography. For something a little different, there is the first ever U.K. solo exhibition of British photographer Cig Harvey at Beetles + Huxley gallery.
